A Sudanese camel caravan approaching Jebel Uweinat
A Sudanese camel caravan approaching Jebel Uweinat - As for spices, fabrics, and treasures of Orient transported on backs of camels it is a thing of the past. Today camels are herded trough Sahara for value they have themselves. A camel bought in Sudan and sold in Kufra gains over 100% in value. Nevertheless it is very far from easy money. You need to cross the desert on foot together with a couple of hundreds of camels to earn it. Sudanese herders who do it are tough indeed. Once in Kufra the camels are fattened for few weeks, sold on local market, and loaded on trucks heading north toward Mediterranean coast to big cites' slaughterhouses.
