New Horizons – 205km Flight in The Atacama Desert

New Horizons - 205km Flight in The Atacama Desert - Paragliding between Caleta San Marcos and Rio Seco, The Atacama Desert, Chile

Since the very beginning of paragliding in Iquique thirty years ago the sandy beaches of the town were the goal of all cross country flights in the area. If you wanted to fly 60km you took off from Patillos, if you wanted to fly 120km you took off from Chipana, etc. And then aimed for landing in Iquique. Passing Iquique and venturing any farther was not an option. This changed last Sunday. I flew 205km from San Marcos landing near Caleta Camarones. I passed Iquique as a mere point along the route, passed Caleta Buena, passed Junin, passed Pisagua, and passed Tiliviche canyon. I believe this flight opened new horizons of what is possible in XC fling in the Atacama Desert. I am sure there will be more paraglider pilots exploring the wild desert north of Iquique to stretch their flight distance. If you embark on such a flight please consider that there is no roads, no access, no retrieve, no safe landing, no cell coverage. There is the scorching sun of the driest desert in the world and unclimbable vertical cliffs of the coastal mountains. Be ready for it, the rewards are amazing.
